These Tōrō Nagashi are part of a Japanese ceremony and are placed in the current of a river."Tōrō"is the Japanese word for lantern and"nagashi"means"let yourself drift"or"swim". This act is traditionally performed on the last evening of the Bon Festival. The ceremony serves to accompany the souls of those who have passed away into the hereafter.
